In 2003, the private investors had acquired the 40% of Government of Ghana shares also. It is now a fully owned by the above-mentioned Promoters.

This Company manufactures Steel Products for the construction Industry and Foundry Castings for the Mining, Cement and General Engineering Industries. Tema Steel Company started production after rehabilitating the plant in 1992. TSCL achieved steady and remarkable production levels since 1992 and reached the full Capacity Utilization of 45,000 Tons per annum in the year 2006.

FOUNDRY DIVISION:

Foundry Division, during the initial stages of TSCL, was producing castings for the maintenance needs of the group companies. Only in the year 2002, it was decided to convert into a full pledged foundry to cater to the needs of the local gold mining industries. With that in view, the foundry with a furnace capacity of 1 Ton, produced about 200 Tons of finished castings for the local mines and construction industries, went for an expansion with an additional furnace, semi automated moulding machines and sand plants etc. TSCL casting products has received good support from end users due to its good quality. At present TSCL produces about 750 Ton per month of steel Grinding balls and 50 Tonnes of all types of liners required for Mining Industries and other general engineering castings.

WEST AFRICAN FORGINGS LIMITED (WAFOR)

COMPANY PROFILE

This company has been promoted by Tema Steel co Ltd, exclusively for the production of Forged Steel Balls of all sizes at a total project cost of about US$ 8.5 Million. With the working capital requirement of US$2,5 Million, the total outlay exceeds US$11 Million.

The total import of Forged steel balls by all the Gold Mines is more than 150,000 Tons per year. Considering the huge potential, Tema Steel co Ltd wanted to cater this market in addition to the cast balls being supplied by them to the tune of 9000 Tons per annum of all sizes.

In the beginning, the ball forging plant will produce ball Sizes of 60mm and 100mm Dia. The forging machine with some additional accessories can make other sizes such as 50mm, 80mm and 90mm. All these sizes put together will cater almost all the gold Mines in Ghana.

Plant:

This plant is a state of the art plant using American Technology to manufacture forged steel balls by ‘Upset Forging Process’. This plant is fully automated to achieve the quality and reproducible results. The advanced ‘Heat Treatment’ facilities will ensure consistent quality, superb surface finish and hardness. The in depth hardness is also ensured by taking out a ‘core’ using a spark erosion technique without altering the structure of the material and checking the through hardness.

The heating is done by Induction heating system which will ensure consistent quality. The raw material is imported from Russia and other European countries to assure quality product.

Capacity:

This plant will initially manufacture 20000 Tons of forged steel balls per annum in 10 hour shift operation. With 24 hour shift operation, a production capacity of 36000 Tons per annum will be reached.

Manpower:

This plant is manned by Expatriates who are trained in the manufacture of Forged steel balls. They have in turn trained the locals for an efficient operation.
